As the year wraps up, we here at Lloyd’s Plumbing wanted to pass on some insider tips that will save you money in the years to come. Think of it as the holiday gift that will keep on giving! As water heating can account for up to 12% of your home energy costs, we thought it prudent to explain how to decrease your water heater power demand, as this will save you a tremendous amount of money year after year!

Here are some tips and tricks to lower your water heater costs:

Lower The Temperature On Your Water Heater

Reducing the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit will optimize your heat without posing a potential danger of scolding. This will also keep your costs in a manageable range. For every ten degrees reduction in temperature, you can save up to five percent on your water heating costs!

Insulate Your Hot Water Heater Storage Tank

There is an inherent heat loss that occurs when your water is stored in a tank. If you have a traditional water heater, it is important to insulate your tank to mitigate this phenomenon. This can reduce your standby heat losses by at least 25%! Just make sure to keep the water heater’s thermostat, burner compartment, top, and bottom exposed!

Upgrade Your Appliance

If your water heater is not functioning properly, and you are experiencing bouts of cold water, it may be time for a system replacement. If your water heater is over twenty years old, it may be time for a new system, as outdated technology is not as efficient as newer models. If your system has aged-out, an upgrade could save you hundreds of dollars.
