4 Maintenance Tips for 2021

It’s the beginning of the year, which means we’re all taking stock of where we are in life and any changes we might want to make. Well, we argue that 2021 should be the year you get your home’s plumbing in order, starting with maintenance. Here are four easy ways to perform some preventative maintenance on your home’s plumbing.

1. Unclog Slow Drains

Slow drains happen, and they can be easily frustrating. Whether it’s a wad of hair or some coffee grinds that entered the pipe, they will clump and block some of the flow.

A slow drain can easily turn into something you kick down the road. Water still goes down, so why do anything? But once it starts to slow, it’s only a matter of time before the pipe closes completely. Then you’re stuck without a drain and possibly standing water in the sink.

2. Watch What You Put Down the Drain

To prevent those slow drains and clogs, the best thing you can do is manage what goes down the drain in the first place. Avoid putting these down the drain:

  • Coffee grounds
  • Oil/grease
  • Stringy vegetables
  • Pasta/rice
  • Hair
  • Produce stickers

3. Do a Leak Inspection

Leaks, even small, can turn into floods quickly. Plus, a leak means the water you’re paying for is being wasted. The risk of a potential flood can be catastrophic and expensive, so paying close attention to possible leaks can save you in the long run.

Check under sinks, behind and around water appliances (washing machine, dishwasher, etc.), and look for any stains around your home. If you hear a dripping noise or notice moisture, call in a local plumber to do a more in-depth inspection.

4. Fix Dripping Fixtures

If water is leaking from your faucet, showerhead, or toilet, fix them right away. Every drop that comes out of these fixtures that you don’t use is water and money wasted.

A faucet leak may be a simple worn out o-ring, which is an inexpensive and easy repair. If you cannot fix leaks yourself, call in a plumber to get the job done right.
